Sub14: Estrecho v Marianistas
Date: 20th January 2018
Ground: Instalaciones Deportivas Pueblo Nuevo Guadiaro
Conditions: Sunny/Windy (16)
Referee: Leonardo Gonzalez Arellano
Estrecho won the toss and chose to play downhill in the first half with a strong wind behind them.
Marianistas kicked off to Estrecho who immediately returned the ball into the Marianistas half of the field. Some strong tackling from Marianistas stopped Estrecho scoring, but in the 8th minute after some fine rucking from the Estrecho forwards Spike broke down the blindside, handed off the last defender to score in the corner. Manu failed to convert the extras (5-0).
Marianistas then went on the attack, with some strong forward drives and won a penalty close to the Estrecho line which Mario took quickly and caught the Estrecho defence napping to barge is way over for a try (5-5).
Estrecho knowing they needed to score as many points as they could in the first half having a strong wind advantage, started to take control of the match. A great catch and chip from Manu at fullback saw Hugo race in for try which was not converted (10-5).
Estrecho were now on top and looked to stretch their lead which they did in the 25 minute, when some fine running by the forwards and some great passing from the backs sent Fran on his way, Fran then beat two Marianistas tacklers to score Estrecho’s third try which was not converted (15-5).
After half time Marianistas played with the wind and straight away used it to their advantage with some great kicks by Mario which sent Estrecho defending deep into their own half. The Estrecho defence stood firm for long periods of time until Juan made a powerful run and scored under the posts for Marianistas which Mario converted (15-12) and then with 10 minutes to go Marianistas won a penalty in the Estrecho half and Mario kicked the 3 points to bring the scores level at 15-15, which set up a grandstand finish.
Both teams went on the attack and both defences stood strong but in the very last minute, strong play from Marianistas led to them winning a penalty 30 metres from the Estrecho posts. Mario stepped up and calmly kicked the winning 3 points for Marianistas who gained revenge over Estrecho for defeating them in Jerez by 12-14 earlier in the season.
A great game of rugby played in good spirits by all the players, a joy to watch. Well done to all the players and thank you to the supporters.
