Sub14: Marbella v Estrecho
Date: 10th February 2018
Ground: Bahia de Marbella Sports Facilities
Conditions: Sunny/Slight Wind (15)
Referee: Enrique Guzmán Espresati
This was the crunch match of the season so far for the Sub 14 players of Estrecho, they needed to win this match against Marbella to win the league for the very first time and progress into the Andalusian Elite League.
It had not been a good week for the Estrecho side who were missing 3 keys players through illness and injury, so everyone in the team needed to step up. Estrecho won the coin toss and kicked off to Marbella but immediately put themselves under pressure by not kicking the ball the full 10 meters. Scrum to Marbella, who pushed Estrecho backwards with their big powerful forwards, they won the ball and attacked the Estrecho line, some strong tackling kept Marbella out but on 7 minutes Marbella scored under the Estrecho posts which they converted (7-0)
What the Estrecho players lacked in size, they made up for with speed, determination, ferocious tackling and great team play, they never stopped working for each other and in the 12 minute after some great attacking play by both forwards and backs Spike dived over to score a try which Manu converted (7-7).
From then on it was all Estrecho, time after time Estrecho attacked the Marbella try line but they could not fight their way over to score another try. Marbella tackled well and their big powerful forwards held Estrecho up over the line on several occasions.
Half Time: 7-7
Marbella kicked off to Estrecho who immediately returned the ball into the Marbella half of the field through strong runs from Fran and Dani.
Great rucking from the Estrecho forwards resulted in a penalty kick at goal from Manu who converted it (7-10). Then directly from the restart Dani made a magnificent break to within 10 metres of the Marbella try line and Estrecho were awarded another penalty that Manu converted (7-13).
Marbella then piled on the pressure but some ferocious tackling from all the Estrecho players kept Marbella out until the 50th minute when the Estrecho defence was caught short on the left hand side and Marbella scored wideout which they failed to convert (12-13). This set up a grandstand finish, the last 10 minutes of the match was fantastic with both sides attacking each other constantly but both defences stood firm and the result was an outstanding win for Estrecho.
Final Score: Marbella 12 Estrecho 13
Estrecho are now Champions of Group 2 and we now go forward to play in the Elite group against the other group winners.
